The New Agency Residency Program supports an emerging First Nation artist in the development of a studio based project and public outcome, utilising the physical space/s of the New Agency project space in Kensington, Birrarung-ga Melbourne.
The artist in residence will be supported and mentored in the development and delivery of their project by Steven Rhall (primary mentor), Dan Mitchell (Footscray Community Arts Centre community partnership mentor), Dr Kate Just (mentor - studio project), and Dr Cameron Bishop (mentor - studio project).

***Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, the dates previously listed have been impacted by limited access to the New Agency Project spaces and associated health and safety concerns. This also relates to ideas of presentation outcomes. An appropriately contextualised residency will go ahead pending approval by the projects funding body. Please register your interest by emailing

Information and guidelines for applicants:
This residency program inherits the general ethos of New Agency in critiquing and responding to traditional modes of art making and presentation. We therefore seek an emerging First Nation artist who ideally has an interest in unorthodox modes of practice including post-conceptual art, process led and performance / performative methodologies. Whilst the residency is 'held' by the physical space of the (New Agency) building, the artist is encouraged to respond creatively to the setting provided including ideas of the 'exhibition,' 'exhibition as form' and creative potentials around the idea of a 'public outcome'.
Eligible applicants: Any artists can apply who identify as First Nation / Peoples of 'Australia.'
Space specifications: The artist has exclusive use of a space sized at 5.3 x 6.6M for both studio and presentation based activities with potential use of an additional space with sink, and roller door with access to alleyway (sized 8.7 x 3 M) dependant on the residency projects needs.

Accomodation and per diems: The artist/s can access accommodation at either of New Agency's two physically sited spaces, upon negotiation.

Artist and material fees: The resident artist will receive an artist fee of $3000 and access to a materials budget of $3000 minimum. Subject to change via increase.

Location: To be determined by participant with access if appropriate to New Agency, rear 490 Macaulay Rd, Kensington or New Agency Barwon Heads.
Physically sited NEW AGENCY specifications: The Kensington and Barwon Heads New Agency project space consists of a small upstairs studio with basic accomodation and kitchen facilities.

Studio resources, access and ammenities: The artist has use of various studio tools and resources including and can access the space 24/7 via roller door using a key / passcode. The space has CCTV for the safety of all users. The studio and presentation spaces are fully accessible but the toilet and upstairs residence unfortunately have stairs. Access to an accessible bathroom with neighbouring tenants may be arranged if required.
The studio is not suited to arts practice which requires the use of open flames or generates loud noise however some of these activities can be supported with prior consultation.
